She had her mother's hair, that particular shade of reddish gold. Even looked like her while the babe was asleep, that type of innocence, that youth. That love. With gentle fingers the man reached out and tousled a single curling lock of flaming gold, caressed the silken-soft cheeks that only a babe could have.
Abruptly he turned away from the crib, stared around at the walls, the curtains. Not the the pictures, no not them. And most definitely not the bed, their bed. Even so, she was everywhere. The little homey touches, the lace edging of the curtains, the lingering of her perfume, the gentle warmth of the blanket that covered their child. She was everywhere, in the room, in their home, in his thoughts. But not in his life, no never again could she be that. And it was all to keep him safe, keep their child safe. Keep their world safe.
Logically he knew, he understood. How could he not, knowing as he did what it was like to sacrifice for loved ones, to put himself on the line. But emotionally? That was a far different thing.
Julian leaned over the crib again, a calloused hand reaching out to pet the back of the sleeping babe. Veda was gone, but he still had her, still had part of her, of them. He still had Leanna. This part he would love, and cherish, and sacrifice all to protect. Just as her mother sacrificed so much to protect them.
